Marinas
This section addresses the gap in technical knowledge between maritime/civil engineers and quantity surveyors working on marina projects. The terminology used in the design and construction of marinas is defined and outlines their facilities.
A list of the British Standards and other codes of practice used by maritime/civil engineers are listed, along with the dimensions and characteristics of a wide range of yachts varying in length from about 8m up to 180m.
Some marinas, such as the Brighton Marina in Sussex, have been built on an exposed coastline. In other exposed locations, disused commercial harbours, such as at Ramsgate in Kent, have been successfully converted into marinas. However, most marinas have been constructed on rivers and inland waterways.
The approach channel to a marina, a review of the use of floating breakwaters and the layout requirements for a yacht basin are also covered in depth.
