Taking deposits

Tenancy deposit protection (TDP) is designed to prevent landlords from unfairly retaining tenants’ deposits at the end of their tenancies. TDP continues to apply to assured shorthold tenancies (ASTs) that are subject to the transitional provisions under the Renters’ Rights Act 2025 and new assured periodic tenancies (APTs), as introduced by the Act, where a monetary deposit is taken from the tenant. This section explains the approved schemes and the process of registering deposits in detail.
