Temporary works

Temporary works (TW) can be defined as the parts of a project needed for the permanent works to be built. TW are particularly important in infrastructure from a health and safety, design, and cost perspective.

However, the term covers a vast scope, and no two projects are identical. This section therefore seeks to give an overview and understanding of likely uses and scenarios.

It begins by explaining TW in the infrastructure sector (e.g. in rail works and bridges), before examining the main features of key legislation.

It then moves on to cover aspects of commercial management in relation to TW, including planning, costing and the role of the estimator. A brief glossary of relevant terminology is also provided.

This section is maintained by Peter A. Greenhalgh of Turner & Townsend.
