The corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete is an electrochemical process, easily illustrated in the form of a simple Volta's cell. Here, two different materials are immersed in an electrolyte and electrons flow from the anode towards the cathode. The anode then dissolves and hydrogen forms on the cathode.
