A Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) is made under the Transport and Works Act 1992. A TWAO is normally used for authorising:
a new railway
a new tramway scheme or
the construction of an inland waterway.
A TWAO will not apply to a nationally significant rail scheme, which requires a DCO.
