Bills of quantities for infrastructure
Most bills of quantities are produced using software packages, each with a different format for inputting dimensions and formulating descriptions.
However, knowledge of measurement conventions is still useful to fully understand potential problems in the measurement process.
Measurement of buildings must be accurate and consistent. Even a medium-sized project will generate lots of drawn documentation. This is passed to the quantity surveyor (QS) for measurement, who then:
- manages the measurement process and
- determines the presentation style for the bill of quantities.
Bills of quantities allow for a direct comparison between contractors pricing on a project. They also provide a basis for post-contract management, including:
- remeasurement/admeasurement
- final account preparation
- interim valuations and
- audit.
