This radiator was dismantled to reveal severe deposits of sludge. The radiator had developed a pinhole beneath one such deposit, but it was clear that significant reductions in thickness had occurred elsewhere. No records of water treatment at installation could be found. The system had been drained on two occasions and refilled owing to circulation problems and although treatment had been carried out since it is most probable that the bacterial sludge had formed early in the life of the system.
