To stop rain getting into the flue, ventilated inserts are added to the top of the pot. This is a reasonable solution where the flue is not in use by any type of heating appliance. However, I have seen these inserted into chimneys that are still being used by gas fires putting the occupants at risk. When you see these, make sure you check the fireplaces below.
