(a) The occupant of a bungalow complained that the smoke from this open flue coal fire came back into the room. On inspection, there was no ventilation to the room and when asked when the chimney was last swept, the occupant could not remember. |

(b) This is a view up the chimney of the fire in (a) and shows the thick layer of soot on the sides of the flue. Not only will this reduce the efficiency of the flue but it could also present a fire risk. |

(c) This is the view between the outside of the new canopy and the inside faces of the original flue with the gaps sealed with foam material of the fire shown in (a). However, what is that electric light? Probably done for the visual effect, it looks like a typical DIY addition and is unlikely to meet current standards. I dread to think what would happen to the wiring when a large log fire is set in the grate below. This warrants a further investigation with a warning to the client that they should not use the fire until this has been done. |
