Clive Cain was previously the Quality Director of the Defence Estates Agency, where he gained a deep understanding of end-users' frustrations over the failure of building projects to meet their time, cost and quality expectations.
As the Ministry of Defence was a major client, Clive decided in 1996 to put in place a major R&D project to adapt best practice in lean thinking from the manufacturing sector. The project became known as Building Down Barriers.
The Building Down Barriers project resulted in Clive being invited to become a founder member of the UK Movement for Innovation Board, as well as becoming the Defence Estates’ representative on the UK’s Design Build Foundation and on the UK’s Construction Round Table.
Following his retirement from Defence Estates Agency he has written several action-learning books on lean construction.
